At Least $360,000 in NFTs Stolen From BAYC After Hack

The largest non-fungible token (NFT) collection, Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), was the victim of hacking and theft for the third time, with the thieves taking an estimated 20 Ether (ETH), equivalent to $360,000 in NFTs. The security intrusion occurred on June 4.1, a Saturday.

NFTherder originally reported the attack on Twitter on June 4 and thinks that 145 ETH (about $260,000) was also taken, with the cash being traced to four other wallets.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The third hack of the year occurred on Saturday at the Bored Apes Yacht Club (BAYC).
  • At least 20 ethers (ETH) worth $360,000 in non-fungible tokens were taken (NFTs).
  • According to the Twitter user who originally reported the attack, 145 ETH, or around $260,000, may have also been taken.

‘Still Investigating’

Many hours after NFTherder’s post, BAYC’s parent company, Yuga Labs, responded with the following tweet: “Our Discord servers were momentarily abused today. The group instantly recognized it and dealt with it. NFTs valued at about 200 ETH appear to have been affected. Email us at discord@yugalabs.io if you were impacted while we are still looking into it.

On Monday, June 6, a representative for BAYC’s parent firm, Yuga Labs, stated that there is no new information to disclose.

After the project community manager Boris Vagner’s Discord account was compromised, the hacker uploaded phishing links in the channels of both the main BAYC and its associated metaverse, named Otherside.

Gordon Goner, a creator of BAYC, attributed the security vulnerability to Discord, but Steve Fink, a fellow cryptocurrency pioneer, told Fortune: “You lost your NFT because you signed a fraudulent transaction with your key. Discord is not to blame; switching clients won’t prevent you from making the same errors again.

A Banner Year in 2021

In April 2022, the Miami-based blockchain business Yuga Labs released BAYC, a collection of 10,000 distinct Bored Ape NFTs. A few months later, it was followed by Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC). It brought in $127 million by the end of 2021, and this year, it completed two acquisitions.

The attack on Saturday was the third time a fraudster pretended to be a Yuga-Labs account in order to steal money from consumers. 5 The first occurred on April 1 when Mutant Ape Yacht Club #8662 was taken via a phishing link released in the project’s Discord, and the second occurred on April 25 when a bogus link to an Otherside minting was uploaded by BAYC and came from its Instagram and Discord accounts.

The Bottom Line

Discord was accused for the security breach by a BAYC founder, but an observer didn’t agree, claiming that you “signed a fraudulent transaction with your key.” Yuga Labs, the hack’s parent firm, tweeted that it is “still investigating.”
